History of Spanish Culture

How much do you really know about Spanish history and culture? This course

offers an immersive journey through Spain’s dynamic cultural identities, from its historical foundations to its vibrant modern expressions. This experiential course goes beyond traditional lectures, inviting students to explore Spanish history, literature, art, music, customs, and traditions firsthand.


The History of Spanish Culture activity is part of Area 1 of the Gap Year in Spain program of CIS and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

Through interactive classroom discussions, guided museum tours, visits to historical sites, and cultural events, students will gain a deep understanding of Spain's unique identity. The course emphasizes practical engagement, allowing students to see, hear, and feel the influences that have shaped Spanish culture over the centuries.


Within Area 1, the student can decide whether to take Experiential and Cultural Spain at CIS University or History of Spanish Culture at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M).

Learning Outcomes


By the end of the course you will be able to:


  1. Identify key historical events and figures that have shaped Spain’s cultural heritage.

  2. Analyze major works of Spanish literature, art, and music within their historical and social contexts.

  3. Develop an understanding of Spain’s regional diversity and how it influences national identity.

  4. Engage in cultural practices and traditions to experience Spanish customs firsthand.
